Written Statement
I was a career military officer, who retired from the Army as Vice Chief of Staff after almost 40 years of service. As a Division and Corps Commander in Iraq, I focused on the changing demands of a non-linear battlefield, the development and application of Counter-Insurgency doctrine and the welfare of the soldiers under my command. Shortly after my retirement, I was privileged to receive the 2013 Patriot Award, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s highest honor for my dedication and ongoing efforts to help soldiers, civilians and families suffering from brain diseases and injuries.
As Chief Executive Officer of One Mind, I now focus on removing the stigma and discrimination associated with brain diseases and injuries, while advocating the adoption of Open Science Principles as essential to finding better diagnostics, treatments, and someday cures, for the invisible wounds of war.
My experiences with soldiers suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Stress have molded my passion to be a catalyst for educating people about these invisible wounds and advancing the science, while always focusing on the patient.
