Written Statement

I served in the Marines from 1980-1986.   After my discharge, I frequently missed serving in my country's uniform, but assumed that such service was no longer an available option for me.   After almost 21 years, I found out that the National Guard might, possibly, let me enlist.  As soon as I found out that I was eligible, I enlisted.  It was December of 2006, I was nearly 45 years old.  People often ask me why I would join at that age.  The answer is very simple.  When the National Guard told me that I could enlist, that meant that there was some contribution that I could still make.  With all the trouble going on in the world, I knew that if I could contribute - and did not - I would not be able to face myself in the mirror each day.  I am very proud that I can still answer my country's call, and honored that my country still calls.
